Cebuano author is national artist for literature
CEBU, Philippines — Cebuano author, Dr. Resil Mojares, has been named national artist for literature.
Mojares, 75, shares the recognition with six other national artists, including Ryan Cayabyab for music, Francisco Mañosa for Architecture, Ramon Muzones for Literature, Larry Alcala for Visual Arts, Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio for theater, and Kidlat Tahimik for Film.
The awarding ceremony will take place in Malacañang today.
Mojares’ nomination came from the University of San Carlos where he is a Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Hope Yu, head of the national committee of literary arts, a sub-committee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), said Mojares is exceptional.
“When we think of his achievements and how he contributed to the development of literary arts, his achievements are stellar,” she told The FREEMAN.
Mojares is a literature professor, a historian, and critic. He has authored several books and received many awards for his literary compositions.
Yu said Mojares’ works are well acknowledged by his peers and has been mentoring others.
It was Mojares who established the country’s first study center – the Cebuano Studies Center where Yu sits as director. – JMO (FREEMAN)
