CEBU, Philippines — What would have been a happy affair suddenly turned tragic when a woman attending her son’s graduation day in Barili, Cebu was shot dead by the father of her son in the middle of the ceremony.

PO3 John Robert Sacan of the Barili Police said the incident happened at past 3:30 p.m. at the gymnasium in Barangay Balao.

Sacan said the perpetrator, Syrin Anotado, who was at the ceremony reportedly became furious when he saw the victim, Lucilita Rebuyas, talking to the mother of her current live-in partner.

Anotado pulled out the .38 caliber he was hiding in his waist and shot Rebuyas at the back of her head.

Rebuyas did not make it to the hospital alive.

Sacan said Rebuyas and Anotado separated over a year ago but Anotado reportedly wanted the woman back. Rebuyas, however, refused.

“Dili naman daw ni makigbalik ang biktima,” Sacan said.

Anotado reportedly is married to another woman in Negros Oriental and did not leave that woman legally before living in with Rebuyas.

Anotado and Rebuyas have three children, all in elementary school.  Police arrested Anotado and locked him up at the Barili Police detention cell where he awaits the filing of criminal charges.

They clarified that he is not a drug surrenderer. — /JMO (FREEMAN)
