68 families homeless after fire hits Basak

CEBU, Philippines - Sixty-eight families lost their homes when a fire hit Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday morning.

Initial investigation showed that the fire started in the kitchen of resident Ruben Perez. The fire spread fast as the kitchen area was made of light materials.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Climaco Salisid said that children playing with matches were being blamed as cause of the fire.

The Bureau of Fire Protection received the alarm at 10:21 a.m. and firetrucks arrived at the scene five minutes later. The blazed destroyed 45 houses and damaged three others, causing P350,000 worth of damage.

Basak Rescue Team Leader Lyn Goles said no one died or was injured during the incident.

The city government has identified Sudtunggan Elementary School as temporary shelter for the affected residents. — Niño Earl Tumulak (FREEMAN)
