Trailer truck runs over boy, 6
CEBU, Philippines - A 6-year-old boy died on the spot after he was run over by a trailer truck near the tunnel at the South Road Properties in Cebu City yesterday morning.
Police identified the victim as Jonas Cuyno of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City.
The truck, driven by Marlon Velos, 30, of Subangdaku in Mandaue City, was tracking the lane from Talisay City to Mandaue City when the driver allegedly failed to notice that the boy was crossing the street and hit him past 11 a.m., the initial investigation conducted by the Traffic Patrol Group disclosed.
An emergency response team tried to bring the boy to the Cebu City Medical Center, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Francisco Ouano, Cebu City Transportation Office operations chief, said Cuyno, along with his elder brother, was crossing the zigzag stripes in the tunnel when the truck hit the boy.
“Niuna labang ang iya igsoon then ni apas diay siya then wala naka-brake ang truck…patay gyud nalata… definitely the driver gyud ang may sala,” he told THE FREEMAN.
In a dyAB report, Velos apologized over the incident, saying he did not mean it.
He said he saw the boy from afar but did not know he would suddenly cross the lane.
The report said the boy was with four other children when the incident happened. The others, fortunately, were left unharmed.
It added that the victim’s mother earned a living by selling cigarettes while his father is a vendor at Carbon market.
The child reportedly used to sleep at the SRP using a cardboard.
Ouano advised the public, particularly the parents, not to let their children play or cross near the tunnel, which is prohibited.
“Tanan parents ba please ko always watch your children always don’t leave them alone specially the young ones,” he said.
The traffic group led by Police Officer 2 Gaudencio Catig Jr. is still further investigating the incident as of press time.
The driver has been taken into custody by the Traffic Patrol Group pending the filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide. — Michael Vencynth H. Braga and Odessa O. Leyson (FREEMAN)
