Cebu City honors outstanding individuals, groups

CEBU, Philippines - A promoter of quality medical education, a trailblazer in the processing of government transactions, and a Cebuana beauty queen were among the individuals who received special awards from the Cebu City government last night at the Cebu Grand Convention Center.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña presented the plaques of recognition to Dr. Carlito Astillero for his commitment to the local medical education and organizing the MHAM College of Medicine Multipurpose Cooperative for the benefit of the staff, LTFRB-7 Director Ahmed Cuizon for professionalizing the processing of office transactions and Jamie Herrell for her environmental advocacies and for winning Miss Earth 2014.

Special awardees were City of Haarlemmermeer, Cebu Provincial Board, Governor Hilario Davide III, Atty. Gervasio Lavilles, Doctor Rhigel Jay Tan, Senior Superintendent Ma. Luisa Hadjula, Senior Superintendent Joel Doria, Task Force Alpha, Paolo Dy, and Jay Kummer “Tubig Queen”Teberio.

Osmeña recognized Davide and the Provincial Board for their support to the resolution of the 93-1 lot issue with the city.

City Hall also gave posthumous award to the late Emeterio Leyson Supapo for his loyalty and dedication to his work as former barangay captain of Pit-os, particularly in facilitating the construction of Tigbao Bridge and the opening of Pit-os Barangay High School.

Yesterday morning, special awards were also given to City Structural Engineer Nilo Igot, the Cebu City Transportation Office, and the Department of Public Services for their dedication and commitment to public service.

Youth leaders of Cebu City were also recognized through the Young Sugboanon Exemplary and Action-driven Leaders (YOUSEAL) Award, which used to be the Outstanding Cebu City Youth Leader Award.

This year’s YOUSEAL awardees were Arianwen Rollan of the Cebu City National Science High School (high school category), Bret Alfonso Balbuena of the University of San Carlos (college category), Atty. Athena C. Plaza (youth professional category), and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University – Industrial Engineering Council (youth organization category).

Also awarded yesterday were 13 board and Bar topnotchers from Cebu City, thanks to a 2014 ordinance authored by Councilor Mary Ann Delos Santos that made this possible.

According Delos Santos, this was the first time since the measure was approved that the city government gave out the award. Among the topnotchers recognized was Plaza who ranked second place in the Philippine Bar examination in 2015. — Jean Marvette A. Demecillo and Vania Mae Lim (BANAT NEWS)
