CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City government is looking forward to institutionalizing a Violence Against Women's desk in every barangay in the city.
Felipa Solana, City Social Welfare Department head, disclosed that the city receives at least three abuse cases against women every month and they see the trend to be increasing.
Solana explained that the increase may be because a lot of women are now aware of their rights.
With a VAW desk in each barangay, Solana said they can better attend to the abuse cases against women in the city.
Earlier this week, the Legal Alternatives Women (LAW) Center Incorporation, in cooperation with Talisay City, conducted a one day training for barangay captains, VAW desk officers and the Federation of Barangay Women’s Center to discuss to them Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against Women and Children’s Act of 2004.
Lawyer Virginia Palangca Santiago, Deputy Ombudsman of the Visayas and president of the Board of Directors of LAW Center Inc., explained to the participants the importance of women in the community and their rights.
She further discussed to the group how they should handle abuse cases against women and the steps they should follow in addressing the complaint. (FREEMAN)
