20 Medellin families moved due to flooding

The strong current at the river in Caputatan Norte, Medellin has prompted the local government to close the bridge there temporarily.

CEBU, Philippines – At least 20 families residing near a creek in Sitio Bangon, Barangay Poblacion, Medellin town were moved out of the area after the creek overflowed following heavy rains in the town since Wednesday.

Mayor Joven Mondigo said they decided to move the families to ensure their safety since the creek's water level almost reached critical.

The families are housed temporarily at the barangay hall in Poblacion and will be provided with relief assistance from the town.

Mondigo said he has also instructed the local disaster team to check other areas that may be at risk.

"Kana diha lugara, naa pa tay diha gipang-monitor nga barangay… as of this time, atong gihangyo atong mga responders nga mo-check, especially nga naay area didto like area sa Lamintak Norte nga portion, naay canal nga nag-overflow" Mondigo said.

The bridge located in Sitio Martinez in Barangay Caputatan was closed temporarily due to flooding, according to the town's official Facebook account.

"Due to flooding and strong current in Sitio Martinez, Caputatan Norte, Medellin, the bridge in the area is temporarily closed to pedestrians and vehicles. Everyone is advised to take the alternate route and take precautionary measures," the post reads.

The local disaster team has also rescued students who were stranded near the Sitio Martinez Bridge to Caputatan Norte.

There will be no classes in both elementary and high school in the town today. —/JMO (FREEMAN)
