Man shot dead in Bogo City

CEBU, Philippines - A man was killed after he was shot by a man he had an argument with past 11 in the evening Saturday in Bogo City.

The victim was identified as Deonelo Saplad while the suspect, who is now detained at the Bogo City Police Station, was identified as Genesis Roda Ortega, 26.

According to Police Officer 2 Alexander Angao, assistant investigator of Bogo Police Station, Saplad was drinking with Ortega's uncle at a nearby store when suddenly Ortega appeared and told his uncle in an angry manner to have dinner.

This reportedly irked Saplad and a heated argument between him and Ortega ensued.

Saplad and Ortega parted ways after the argument and while the victim was walking in Sitio Cabangkalan, Barangay Dakit, Ortega allegedly shot him before fleeing away.

Police responded to the incident and saw Saplad lying on the ground unconscious. The victim was immediately rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital of Bogo City, but was declared dead on arrival.

Ortega was arrested in a hot pursuit operation by the responding police officers.

Recovered from him was a caliber 357 revolver loaded with four bullets.

Meanwhile, the father of the 12-year-old boy who was injured when his firearm accidentally went off has been charged by the Mandaue City police with illegal possession of firearms.

Glenn Bucabuca is facing a complaint for illegal possession of firearms after he failed to show a license for his gun, which accidentally went off and hit his son, Nicole Lester, last Saturday around  5:40 p.m.  in Sitio Lourdes Jagobiao, Mandaue City

Investigation revealed that Nicole Lester, together with his two brothers, Kenn Louis and Ivory James, was watching TV in the sala when their father entered their room to find the key of his motorcycle.

Glenn reportedly placed his firearm on top of the bookshelf, but the gun fell and suddenly went off. The bullet passed through the wooden wall in the sala where his three sons were, hitting Nicole.

The victim was immediately brought to the Eversly Childs Sanitarium Hospital and was later transferred to the Chong Hua where he is currently confined and is in critical condition.

Glenn, in an interview, expressed sadness over the incident.

 "Sakit pa kaayu para naku ang nahitabu, critical gihapon karun akung anak. Wala jud to naku tuyoa. Dili gani ko musugot nga matugpahan sila’g lamok, kana pa kaha," he said, adding that the firearm was given to him by his late father two years ago.

On the other hand, the mother of the victim signed an affidavit of desistance to show that the family will not file a case against Glenn.  (FREEMAN)
