CEBU, Philippines - An odd-even and color-coding scheme will soon be soft-implemented among public utility jeepneys and passenger multicabs plying M.C. Briones, A.S. Fortuna and M.L. Quezon streets in Mandaue City.
Romeo Armamento, vice president of the National Confederation of Transportworkers Union-Central Visayas, said with the recent approval of an ordinance on this matter, the soft implementation is going to happen before the end of the year or early part of next year.
Armamento said this is done in order to decongest traffic in the said routes.
The said ordinance was based on the recommendation of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, the traffic arm of the city.
Under this ordinance, all PUJs with plate numbers ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) coming from M.C. Briones south will have to go straight to the Maguikay flyover.
Those ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) will turn left to A.S. Fortuna, then turn right to V. Albaño Street, and turn right to M.L. Quezon before turning left to M.C. Briones and finally to their destination.
Section 3 of the ordinance provides that all PUJs and passenger multicabs must put “legible numbers” (the number 1 for odd numbers, and 2 for even numbers) in the uppermost portion of the windshield so TEAM personnel can easily spot them.
This ordinance was approved on first reading last September 23. It will be effective after it gets published in a newspaper of general circulation. (FREEMAN)
