Day 1 of Misa de Gallo peaceful in Region 7

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The first day of the traditional Misa de Gallo yesterday was peaceful throughout Central Visayas but authorities said this is not reason for the police to be complacent.

In fact, Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas of the Police Regional Office – 7 said no less than Police Regional Office – 7 chief, Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, has ordered for tightened security throughout the holiday season.

Lawas said no major incident was reported from 3 a.m. when many masses started until 6 a.m. In Cebu City in particular, no crime was reported to police stations within this time frame.

“Duna nay directive atong regional Director nga i-sustain nato ang security preparations not only during Christmas but also during the New Year,” Lawas said.

He said the city police office will evaluate the security measures put in place on the first day of Misa de Gallo to know which initiatives should be sustained to maintain the peace and order in the 34 churches in the city.

Supt. David Señor, chief of Police Community Relations Branch, said that aside from the churches, the police will also secure areas outside churches where food is being sold.

“Atong nabantayan nga inig human sa misa  ang mga tawo adto padulong sa painitan, mao nang kaning mga lugara ato sad ni’ng i-secure,” Señor said.

He reminded the public to be wary of pickpockets and snatchers who may take advantage of the huge crowds at churches. — (FREEMAN)
