Davide: Liberal remains strong
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III has dismissed reports that several members of the Liberal Party are leaving to join the opposition.
“I believe we are strong...I don’t know where that tsismis came from, intriga siguro,” said Davide in a press conference.
Davide, who just arrived from Manila yesterday morning, also denied rumors that Vice Governor Agnes Magpale is jumping to another ship. He said the reports may just be a tactic from their opponents to sow intrigues.
“Last time I heard, ga-istorya man mi (with Magpale) ganihang buntag, kami pa man,” he said.
He said their tandem for 2016 was declared “a year ago,” and that despite of the purported efforts to break it, they remain strong.
“We are strong, firm among decision,” Davide said.
The rumors of Magpale leaving the LP came after her local political party, Bakud, welcomed Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero in Danao City.
Davide said the warm welcome given by the officials of Bakud Party to Poe and Escudero should not be construed as supporting them and leaving LP. He said the reason could be because of Escudero’s closeness to Congressman Joseph Ace Durano, Bakud’s vice president.
“He (Durano) is a friend of Chiz (that was why he welcomed him here). Haka-haka gihapon lagi (by) those against LP, and those against me who want to destroy us,” he said.
Davide said there has also been no statement from the Duranos that they are throwing their support to the Poe-Escudero team.
“We are intact. We strive to be stronger,” Davide said.
As to One Cebu telling them to “watch out” next year, Davide said they should better watch out themselves as they are already prepared.
Davide said the LP will make the formal announcement of its complete slate on Monday. He said everything will be finalized on Sunday.
“Nganong mo-watch out man? (They should) mind their own business, magporma sila. Tan-awon nato makaporma ba sila,” he said.
Davide claimed they have the support of the majority of the mayors and the district congressmen. — (FREEMAN)
