Typhoon “Jenny”: PAGASA reminds public to be alert

CEBU, Philippines -  The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration-Visayas is urging the public not to be complacent even though tropical storm Jenny (international name “Dujuan) would have no significant effect over Visayas.

 The tropical cyclone has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility Wednesday evening but is not expected to make landfall.

 However, it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” which will affect Visayas and Mindanao, said PAGASA Mactan chief meteorologist Al Quiblat.

 Also, it may intensify into typhoon category as it heads toward Japan, Taiwan and eastern China. It is expected to exit the PAR Tuesday morning.

 The weather bureau yesterday located Jenny at 1,120 kilometers east of Calayan Island, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 120 kph. It is likely to move west northwest at 7 kph.

 Quiblat said precautionary measures are needed because occasional light to moderate rains over the weekend might saturate the soil and increase the possibility of flooding and landslide.

He advised the public, especially those who are living in slopes, to be watchful for signs of imminent threat of landslide.

 Aside from those, Quiblat said Visayas will continue to experience also moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to west. Coastal waters will also be rough as the tropical storm prevails. —/ATO (FREEMAN)
