CEBU, Philippines - For the 21st time, Gilbert Bargayo, will have himself crucified on Good Friday in Tuburan, a town located some 100 kilometers away from Cebu City.
Bargayo, a native of Carcar City, became famous after he had himself crucified to re-enact Christ’s crucifixion during Good Friday for the last 20 years.
Although the Catholic Church do not encourage someone to inflict pain to show his faith and to show that he is really renewed yet Bargayo continues his yearly crucifixion.
Bargayo had said he could feel Christ’s suffering by reenacting the crucifixion.
Tuburan Mayor Aljun Diamante said Bargayo only asked that he help him build his chapel in Carcar City in any way he can.
Diamante said that before the actual crucifixion, the way of the cross will take place starting at around 9 a.m. This will re-enact the hours prior to Christ’s death. After the way of the cross, the siete palabras or the reflection of the seven last words uttered by Christ before his death will follow.
Diamante said anyone is welcome to Tuburan if they want to witness or take part in the Holy Week activities.
Last year, scores of local and foreign tourists flocked to the town watch Bargayo’s crucifixion, including the foreign press. — (FREEMAN)
