The Freeman gets recognition from DSWD

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Social Welfare and Development has recognized The Freeman for the paper’s support in the agency’s programs through the stories it has published.

The Freeman was given the Most Supportive Newspaper and Most Supportive Newspaper Reporter (for reporter Jessa Agua) awards during DSWD’s anniversary celebration Friday.

DSWD also recognized the Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN), Sun.Star Cebu reporter Elias Baquero, and Bombo Radyo Cebu. Partner institutions and agencies were also recognized for their continued support for programs of the agency.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Teodulo Romo, Jr. noted how the agency shifted its approach in carrying out its program – from solo enforcement to forging ties with private and government institutions.

“If our country were a ferry, then it’s the second biggest ferry in all ASEAN nations. The passengers are 100 million and 25 million of these are literally outside the ferry and struggling in the waters as they are considered poor. The Philippine Ship has left them behind. This explains why they join rebel groups because many of them don’t feel like they are inside the ship,” Romo said.

DSWD, Romo added, realized that government resources do not reach the poor sectors of the community that is why the agency chose to bring these basic services to their doorstep through its program.

“Through convergence and partnerships, we are able to serve and improve the situation of the poor recognizing that success is achieved in collective approach. Helping the poor can be very tiring considering the magnitude of people to cater to. But when you see the faces the people you have helped, it makes you feel good,” Romo added.

Present last Friday night was Regional Director Mercedita Jabagat and local government officials from the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, and Negros Oriental led by Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III. -/JMO (FREEMAN)
