CEBU, Philippines - At least 56 children from Sitio Camolinas in Cordova, Cebu were given bicycles by a non-government organization during a Christmas party yesterday.

Jens Funk, chairman of the non-profit NGO Bike 4 U Foundation, said the bicycles were donations from Germany.

“They are used but well-conditioned bicycles that are sent from Germany through donations,” he said.

Bicycles in various co-lors were given to children aged 6 to 14 years old.

“You can really see them in all smiles. They even forget to plunge in the swimming pool because they are excited for the bicycles,” said Funk.

Funk said the party was realized in coordination with his friend Johannes Leid, also a German and a board of trustee member of Justice F Foundation, a group that provides housing projects and educational scholarships.

Started in 2006, Bike 4 U Foundation distributes bicycles with the aim to promote healthy lifestyle among the beneficiaries, as well as have them use the bike as a mode of transportation or for recreation, said Funk.

He said they are set to also give bicycles to children in Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City and in Bantayan Island next year.

Bugoy Bikers Club, also founded by Funk, helped out in distributing the bicycles.  (FREEMAN)
