Man stabs grandpa, sets house on fire

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A 22-year-old man stabbed his 83-year-old grandfather and set his aunt's house on fire Monday in Barangay Hagnaya, San Remegio before he surrendered to the police.

Edimel Maglasang appeared at the police station around 11:30 p.m. on Monday and asked the police to arrest him, claiming that he stabbed his grandfather and burned their house.

The police did not believe him at first thinking that the man was just taking them for a ride until they learned about the incident.

SPO1 Wilfredo Bunado, desk officer, said the suspect stabbed Eliseo Maglasang using a pair of scissors. The victim was able to parry the attack but injured his left palm in the process.

After attacking his grandfather, the suspect set their house on fire. The victim and his wife were able to run outside the house for safety. The suspect lives with his grandparents in the house owned by his aunt, Analiza Maglasang.

Bunado said the suspect refused to answer questions on why he did it. The police learned that the suspect went home mad Monday evening for unknown reason.

Fire Officer 3 Rolando Martines Reuyan estimated the damage at P500,000.

Reuyan said they are just waiting for the decision of the victims if they will file criminal complaints against the suspect.

"Ang police ug ang fire department magsabot lang unsay angay nga buhaton ug iya (suspect) mang giangkon ang sunog mas dali," Reuyan said.

The police are already preparing criminal complaints for physical injury and arson against the suspect.— (FREEMAN)
