CEBU, Philippines - The Naga City government will plant 3,950 seedlings to replace the 79 trees inside the Naga Central School it will cut today.
The 79 trees have to be cut to pave the way for the construction of more classrooms in the school, as well as a track and field oval of the city.
Last week, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – 7 gave the go signal to cut the trees.
DENR-7 information officer Eddie Llamedo said the trees will be cut with the supervision and monitoring of the City Environment and Natural Resources in Cebu City. The 79 trees are composed of 48 mahogany, 15 agoho, 10 narra, 5 neem, and one lomboy. About 50 percent of the trees to be cut were found to be in the decayed state.
“The Naga City government will replace these 79 trees with 3.950 seedlings with the National Greening Program sites in Naga City,” Llamedo said. The trees that will be cut will be used to make tables and chairs for the school.
Earlier, DENR undersecretary for Field Operations Demetrio Ignacio Jr. issued a memorandum to DENR-7 Executive Director Isabelo Montejo dated September 23, 2014, to inform the latter that the undersecretary has granted the clearance, to process and issue a “special tree cutting permit” in favor of Naga City Environment and Pollution Control Officer Engineer Jose Ramiro Hilado.
