Cop accidentally shoots himself
CEBU, Philippines - A policeman was injured after he accidentally pulled the trigger of his service firearm while inside his residence at Climaco Compound, Barangay Bulacao, Cebu City Saturday night.
Senior Police Officer 1 Gamaliel Badana, who is presently assigned as an investigator at the Investigation and Detective Management Branch (IDMB) of the Cebu City Police Office, sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh that went through his knee.
IDMB Chief Aileen Recla said that Badana just arrived in his house from work and was about to change clothes when he drew his service firearm, a Glock 17, that was tucked on his waist.
“Paglingkod niya, napiit iyang armas. Iyang gikuot unya nai-trigger in niya. Kuyaw man ang gloc kay once makablit lang og gamay or matagak, diretso na og kabuto kay humok man ‘nya wa’y lock,” she said.
Badana reportedly did not feel at first the gunshot but only realized he was hit by his firearm after his thigh went numb. Since he was the only one in his house, he applied the dressing on his wound.
Recla said that Badana also went to the hospital for treatment and was allowed to go home after. She added that Badana is already okay.
She further noted that for now, she is waiting for Badana’s explanation why he had not taken extra caution in handling his firearm that resulted to the accidental discharge of his gun.
Recla said that all police personnel are trained to be good firearm holders before they are issued with weapons.
Once Badana will submit his explanation, Recla will assess the case and will determine what sanction he will face. She cited that those who commit negligence in handling firearms will face an administrative charge.
“Possibly, it will serve as a warning to him but I will also wait for the advice of our city director,” she said.
Recla then reminded the policemen to immediately report to their supe-riors any instances related to their service firearms.
“As a police person, you have to be a good handler of your firearm. You have to be conscious. At least wa’y laing naigo pero what if naay naigo? So lesson learned sa iyang part,” she stated, describing Badana as a good policeman. (FREEMAN)
