CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Police Office Women’s and Children’s Protection Desk organized a poster-making contest for out-of-school youths at Camp Sotero Cabahug yesterday morning.

Inspector Ariza Otida, WCPD chief, said that the contest is in line with the celebration of the National Children’s Month that carries the theme “Bata kasali ka, ikaw ay mahalaga.”

She said that the 11 police stations in the city looked for out- of-school youths that would represent them. All-in-all, there were 12 participants, including the representative of CCPO.

The participants were accompanied by the WCPD in-charge of each station.

Each participant had to create a poster based on this year’s theme and was given an hour to create the posters inside the conference hall of the Cebu City Police Office.

Jerson Naya of Barangay Talamban, who represented Talamban Police Station, emerged as the winner.

He said that when he was given one hour to draw, he thought well of the best thing that would best describe the young people of the city.   He added that he did not expect to win but did his best to showcase his talent.

Otida said that in this year’s event, they chose out-of-school youth contestants to harness their potential since students are already taught well in their respective schools.

The winners got P1,500, P1,000 and P800 for the first, second and third prize, respectively. The rest of the contestants received freebies from the organizers.

She said that the poster making contest is only one of the programs that they have set for this month.

Last October 1, CCPO’s WCPD kicked off the celebration of the National Children’s Month with a parade and a short program attended by children from different areas in Cebu City.

On October 31, Otida said, the closing ceremony will showcase the talents of the children in the city. — (FREEMAN)
