DA admits difficulty in regulating prices

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture has admitted being inutile in implementing the price regulation on agricultural products.

Gerry Avila, agribusiness and marketing assistance division chief, said it is hard to catch and arrest violators in the market. Avila likewise admitted that imposing a suggested retail price on agricultural products is difficult because agriculture products are based on seasonality.

The proposed SRP, however, is yet to finalized because of several questions.

“I-finalize pa gyud but plano na lang namo is i-regional base lang so bisan pa lain-lain ang integrator okay ra man kay naa may price scheme but sa overpricing di namo madakop… mao nay naka-complicate sa DA,” Avila said.

Avila explained that there are agriculture products that differ in prices because of their variety.

Citing rice as an example, he said most of the consumers prefer to buy Sinandomeng rice but the prices depend on their variety.

“Daghan og mugamit og Sinandomeng pero daghan ni siya og klase…maglisod gyud ta sa pagkakaron og implement og SRP,” Avila added. (FREEMAN)
