Rama orders immediate purchase of excavator
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has ordered the operations officer of the City’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to purchase an excavator as soon as possible.
“I want that excavator to be delivered. No ifs, no buts. I will hold you responsible and you carry my office,” Rama told CDRRMO operation officer Alvin Santillana in front of reporters yesterday.
Few days ago, Councilors Margarita “Margot” Osmeña and Noel Eleuterio Wenceslao have raised concern on why no excavator has been purchased yet under Rama’s administration.
As proposed, the excavator will be used to clean the rivers and creeks within the city to prevent heavy flooding during the rain.
Based on reports, the City Council has already approved for its acquisition in the amount of P20.5 million.
“Mao na nga dili g’yud kami nga mga konsehal maoy angay’ng basulon kun maglunop dinhi sa siyudad kay gi-approve namo sa City Council ang anti-flood projects sa mayor apan wala niya gamita,” Osmeña said earlier.
However, Rama defended that it has always been his plan to purchase the equipment.
“That has long been a part of what I wanted but there were just a series of events that has occurred,” Rama said.
CDRRMO chief Santillana said they already have a supplier from another country already for the excavator.
He said the equipment will possibly arrive three to five months from now. He assured he is currently processing the papers for its acquisition.
Nevertheless, Rama thanked the council for approving the project which can also be used in clearing operations of buildings and can hold heavy objects.
“I thank that Sangguniang Panglungsod for giving the final approval. I am directing (Santillana) because I remember, if I’m not mistaken, (I have) also signed a purchase order already and I want that delivered. That’s my order,” Rama said. (FREEMAN)
