CEBU, Philippines - The National Electrification Administration has electrified 15,845 sitios out of the 32,441 sitios nationwide.
NEA said they will complete this project, which was hampered by super typhoon Yolanda, before the term of President Benigno Aquino III ends.
The Sitio Electrification Program being implemented by NEA and electric cooperatives nationwide is part of Aquino’s social contract with the Filipino people, which is also included in the Investment Agenda of his administration.
NEA administrator Edi-ta Bueno said in a statement that the accelerated pace of total electrification through the SEP was because of the subsidy releases of P14.281 billion by the national government.
NEA was able to energize 1,520 in 2011; 6,163 in 2012; 5,263 in 2013; and 2,899 from January 1-June 6, 2014.
Electrification of the remaining sitios was spread over 2014 up to the first semester of 2016.
SEP contributed to the provision of electric service to over 10.3 million consumer connections benefitting about 51 million Filipinos in the countryside, the statement reads.
The overall electrification target is to attain 90% electrification of households by 2017, anchored on the Department of Energy’s Household Electrification Plan. (FREEMAN)
