CEBU, Philippines - With the result of yesterday’s transport strike, which paralyzed most of the activities in Metro Cebu, environmentalists called anew the government to provide bike lanes and wider walkways.
“I think it’s high time for the public to demand that public spaces be able to accommodate the rest of the commuting public through sustainable transportation… bike lanes and wide walk ways,†said Vince Cinches of Road Revolution, an organization that promotes biking and walking.
Cinches said the government “should help the public out of this hostage situation†by “pouring in resources†for “a better transportation.â€
Cinches, who uses his bicycle often, said they have already been telling the public for the last many years that it is high-time the motorists share the road to the public, otherwise they will remain hostage of transport strike, fuel price hike, and even pollution.
“It is high time that we should have a better city and transportation planning,†he said.
It can be recalled that the Road Revolution, espoused by environmental lawyer Antonio Oposa, closed for a day the main roads of Cebu City in 2011, this to allegedly show to the public that they can still move around the city by walking or biking. (FREEMAN)
