Inspectors wage war vs meat violations

CEBU, Philippines - Meat inspectors continue to wage war against mishandling of frozen meat and the selling of hot meat inside the city’s public markets.

For the month of January, inspectors confiscated a total of 117.1 kilos of meat at the Carbon Public Market.

The cause of confiscation was mishandling of frozen meat and frozen pork liver and hot meat.

In March, some 5,122 kilos were confiscated majorly due to spoilage and deterioration.

For the month of May, 56.5 kilos of imported pork meat were confiscated and the reason was because of deterioration and improper handling of imported pork. The owner of the place in Unit 1 Carbon Public Market was Marie Suico. It was confiscated around 5:30 a.m. of May 7.

In May, most of the confiscated meat were imported frozen pork meat, imported frozen pork liver, native dressed chicken, assorted chicken cuts, as well as head and feet of chicken.

Dr. Pilar P. Romero of Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries said that could not have been properly stored causing microbial growth, a risk factor for several diseases.

For now, the confiscation is still ongoing in order to minimize the case of sicknesses caused by deteriorated meat.

 The DVMF continues to protect the public from consuming unsafe meat from the restaurants, market, poultry houses and other sources. (FREEMAN)
