PRO-7 to pilot "Project Iris"

CEBU, Philippines - Police Regional Office-7 is set to launch the first online database sharing in the country named "Project Iris."

PRO-7 director, Chief Supt. Danilo Constantino, said the project will be piloted in the four provincial headquarters in Central Visayas; Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.

Constantino said the project might be implemented nationwide depending on the success in the pilot areas.

Constantino explained that "Project Iris" is an internet database of criminal records which will be shared to the different police offices in the region.

"Naka-link ito sa mga units ng provincial headquarters," he added.

"Project Iris" will serve as an online database shared to the different police offices for easier verification of suspected criminals.

Constantino, however, said that the database is purely for law enforcement use and not for the general public.

It is an intelligence project to counter terrorist threats and other crimes.

"Ito ay isang Intel project na ila-launch to counter terrorism, anti-criminality," Constantino said.

Cyberpornography, however, is not included in this project as the battle against it requires another mode of attack, said Constantino.

He said that he has also issued orders to the chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-7 to intensify its efforts against cyberpornography.  (FREEMAN)
