CEBU, Philippines - As part of security preparations for the Sinulog, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has released important guidelines for the public to have a safe and secure celebration.

Senior Supt. Noli Romana, CCPO director, said that Sinulog goers must secure their houses first before leaving, making sure that somebody would be left to watch over the house.

Time and again, they are reminded to unplug all appliances to avoid fire incidents.

The public is also warned against the wearing of valuable items like jewelry, bringing too much cash, flashing expensive gadgets like cellular phones, laptops, tablets, and other items so as not be preyed on by pickpockets and robbers.

Romana said bringing of infants and children are discouraged to avoid the possibility of them getting separated because of the huge crowd.

"Lisod kung naay mga bata kay mawala unya ma-problema na pud sa pagpangita. (It is difficult when they bring along the children because it would be a problem looking for them if they get separated)," Romana said.

He advised for the public to immediately report any suspicious-looking men to the nearest public assistance centers or to any police personnel.

"May mga (We also have) contact numbers na man tayo na pwede nilang tawagan (that they can call)," Romana said.

Chief Insp. Wildemar Tiu, Sinulog preparations sector commander, said everyone must be security conscious, especially during church processions and masses.

"Kung dunay valuables unya mag-gozos na gani much better kung usa lang ka-kamot ang iwara-wara aron sa paglikay nga makuotan. (If you have valuables, better use only one hand to wave during religious rites while the other hand is on your bag)," he said.

Aside from the police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Central Command is deploying 510 personnel from the 2nd Air Division, 53rd Engineering Brigade and the Naval Forces Central as augmentation force during the Sinulog grand parade on Jan. 19. (FREEMAN)
