Majority of Buhisan residents evacuated

CEBU, Philippines - Buhisan barangay officials noted 90 percent compliance from residents earlier advised to take temporary evacuation to safer grounds due to the danger brought about by the tension cracks that were recently discovered in the mountain barangay.

"We are constantly making our constituents understand that it is very dangerous to sleep in their homes at night especially when it rains. Fortunately, they understood and complied," Buhisan barangay captain Glemar Barrete said.

Based on the census conducted by the barangay, there are 30 families or around 300 individuals, directly affected by the tension cracks that developed after the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit Cebu and Bohol last October 15.

"We have nightly attendance on those spending the night at the Buhisan Shrine and barangay gym. On an average, there are around 60 individuals. Most of the affected residents opted to stay with relatives within Buhisan which is already outside the identified danger zone," Barrete explained.

To prevent residents sneaking in and sleeping in their houses fearing burglary and the like, barangay tanods conduct roving inspections to secure the affected area.

Further, Barangay officials have yet to receive the requested folding beds and tents from the Cebu City government.

"As of now (yesterday), the items we requested from the city government has not arrived. But we understand that with the series of fire incidents in the city, they are prioritizing those who most need assistance. But we are hopeful that we can have these folding beds and tents because these will be very helpful," the barangay captain said.

The barangay is providing them with transportation to and from their houses as they are allowed to return home during the day and are required to stay at the evacuation center at night.

Both the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources have recommended for the immediate evacuation of the affected residents to prevent further calamity endangering the lives of the 30 families near the tension crack.
