DTI Cebu says no price hike in calamity stricken areas

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - There are no price increases of basic commodities in big department stores and grocery stores especially in the northern part of Cebu.

“We are happy that based sa atong monitoring no one is taking advantage sa presyo sa atong mga basic commodities,” said DTI-Cebu provincial director Nelia Navarro in an interview with The Freeman.

Navarro however said that a “price freeze” of basic commodities is automatic once an area is declared under the calamity.

She said a penalty of up to P1 million awaits to those who found overpriced.

Navarro said that the team monitored up to Bogo City yesterday where it has  department store. Prices of basic commodities were also stable.

The monitoring team also noted that several  business establishments in the northern part of Cebu were opened and inventory of goods are stable.

“Supplies are stable and there are no increases in the prices of basic commodities,” said Navarro.

There will also be monitoring of prices of basic commodities in the towns of Medellin, Daanbantayan and in Bantayan Island within the week. (FREEMAN)
