Two dead, one hurt in road accidents

CEBU, Philippines - Two people died and another was injured in separate vehicular accidents in the towns of San Francisco in Camotes Island and Minglanilla, south of Cebu.

Crisanta Ostria, 65, of Barangay Sta. Cruz, San Francisco Camotes, died due to severe injuries while she was being transferred from the Ricardo Maningo district hospital to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) after she was hit by a speeding motorcycle in the municipal road of the said barangay.

Ostria reportedly crossed the road past 2 in the afternoon when she was hit by a Rusi Ramjet motorcycle  driven by Michael Luzon, 22, of Sitio Igot.

The victim was immediately rushed to the district hospital but was advised to be taken to VSMMC in Cebu City. However, Ostria died at the Consuelo wharf en route to the port of  Danao City.

Luzon is now temporarily detained at the San Francisco police station pending filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.

In another vehicular incident, a 25-year-old man died after his driven motorcycle collided with another motorcycle at the barangay road of Sitio Tingkoro, Barangay Upper Pakigne, Minglanilla.

Jimmar Cata-ag, of  Belmont Village, Barangay Pakigne died on the spot after his motorcycle  collided with the vehicle of Isidro Sanchez, 22, a motorcycle-for-hire driver of Barangay Tubod.

SPO1 Florante Capangpangan, the responding investigator, said that both motorcycles were traveling on opposite direction. Sanchez reportedly overtook a van he was tailing and crossed the opposite lane which caused the collision with Cata-ag.

Capangpangan said both were not under  the influence of liquor and were not wearing helmets.

“Disgrasya gyud to unya ulo may igo sa biktima. (It was an accident and the victim was hit in the head),” he said in a phone interview.

The family of the victim is trying to settle the matter with the suspect, who was already discharged from the Minglanilla district hospital and is now detained at the Minglanilla police station.  (FREEMAN)
