CEBU, Philippines - A 41-year-old man allegedly stoned to death his mother in front of his two children last Monday in Barangay Cabungaan, San Francisco in Camotes Island.
Joebert Otida, 41, who is believed to be mentally challenged, allegedly hit his mother for several times causing her instantaneous death.
PO2 Marvin Ando, the responding police officer, said that Joebert's mother, Veronica, was sitting inside their house when her son suddenly took two pieces of stones and struck her head.
Ando said that Joebert was reportedly tied by the family because of his alleged condition but Veronica decided to untie him.
The police officer said that they still heard the cry of Joebert's five-year-old daughter while they were approaching the scene.
When they arrived, Ando said the suspect was carrying his one-year-old son as if nothing happened.
Further, Ando revealed that based on their investigation, Joebert started to act strange after he arrived from Bohol a few years back.
Ando said that Joebert started hitting people without any reason. It was at this point when his family decided to tie his foot.
"Buhian man sad ni nila ug tan-aw nila ma-arang-arang na unya ug makabantay sila nga musuol na sad hiktan na sad ug balik (they untie him when they feel he is in a better condition. But when they feel he is acting strange again, they tie him back)," Ando said.
Joebert did not have any criminal record or previous complaints at the police station, where is now detained pending the filing of a parricide case today.
Custody of Joebert's children has been turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office. — (FREEMAN)
