CEBU, Philippines - The City Council is urging the City Health Department to inspect the paintbrushes used to baste barbecued meats.
In his resolution, Councilor Alvin Dizon wants to ensure that the foods basted using these brushes are lead-free.
Lead may contaminate the food and lead to food poisoning which could damage the nervous system and cause brain disorders. The toxin in lead could be developmental and reproductive.
The resolution also calls upon hardware stores in the city to properly label these brushes with its lead content or if it is lead-free. Dizon also wants hardware suppliers to have quantities of lead-free and non-toxic brushes available for sale.
This is to ensure the public’s health and the well-being of innocent customers.
In yesterday’s session where the resolution was approved, Councilor Gerry Carillo urged Dizon to make it an ordinance.
Dizon asked Councilor Mary Ann de los Santos to co-sponsor the ordinance and she agreed.
“Nalipay ko nga gi-acknowledge ni councilor Dizon ang akong interest sa health. (I’m glad Councilor Dizon acknowledged my interest in health),†delos Santos said. She plans to sit down with Dizon so they could discuss the ordinance thoroughly. (FREEMAN)
