CEBU, Philippines - Hundreds of young people from the Archdiocese of Cebu witnessed the launching of the official theme song of the “Barkada ni Pedro” during the 28th  Local world Youth Day celebration in Liloan last Saturday, which was also the feast day of St. Pedro Calungsod.

Rev. Fr. Vic Ampalayo composed a new song for St. Pedro Calungsod entitled “Friends of Pedro,” dedicated for Barkada ni Pedro, an online prayer barkada of the Commission on Youth dedicated to St. Pedro Calungsod.

Ampalayo also composed the theme songs of 24th to the 27th Local World Youth Day.

Deserie Soscano, Jessica Gako, Joemar Paran, Juville Quijoy, Kiking Pagente, Nadia Briones and Jun Bolo of Sto. Niño Parish in Mohon, Talisay City performed the “Barkada ni Pedro” theme song which was arranged by Nendel Endrina.

With the theme “Friendship through prayer with St. Pedro Calungsod,” the message of the song is expected to rally both young ones and the young once from all backgrounds.

The song “Friends of Pedro” may be found on Youtube or at the ‘Barkada ni Pedro’ facebook fan page. It is another project of the ‘Barkada ni Pedro’ of the Commission on Youth of the Archdiocese of Cebu.

The Local World Youth Day is a continuing journey of the young people of Cebu after Saint Pedro Calungsod’s canonization and national thanksgiving last year.

The Archdiocese of Cebu’s Commission on Youth wanted to continue the thrust of St. Pedro Calungsod.

The 6th Archdiocesan Youth Congress was a response to Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma’s challenge to the young people to continue upholding Calungsod in a youthful way.

Archbishop Palma gave the keynote speech while Msgr. Arthur Navales, PC, chairman of the Cebu Diocesan Youth Coordinating Council welcomed the participants.

Fr. Dondon Aquino discussed the topic “Go and Make Disciples of All Nations” while Msgr. Dennis Villarojo, PC, talked about San Pedro Calungsod and the New Evangelization.

Palma also blessed the young pilgrims as they waved their palm fronds during the Palm Sunday service inside the Panphil Frasco Gymnasium in Liloan.

The Mass also culminated the 28th Local World Youth Day celebration, attended by hundreds of young people from the Cebu archdiocese and other dioceses under the Central and Eastern regions.

The three-day gathering also include catechesis, Via Crucis, Taize prayer with confession, talks, workshops, pilgrim walk, holy hour and youth jam.

The municipality of Liloan through the San Fernando El Rey Parish and the District 7 Youth Coordinating Council hosted the two major religious youth activities.  (FREEMAN)
