CEBU, Philippines - A councilor has proposed to open the Cebu City Medical Center College of Nursing to non-city residents because of the decreasing number of enrollees every year.
Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias sponsored a resolution to allow students from outside the city to enroll in the CCMC College of Nursing.
“Gamay na lang kaayo ang mieskwela sa CCMC-College of Nursing nga ang income kuwang pa sa gasto,†Cabarrubias said.
The proposal however is met with opposition by some members of the city council. Cabarrubias was advised yesterday by his colleagues in the council to fine tune his proposal.
Mayor Michael Rama is also hesitant about it. Rama said the proposal should be carefully looked into because he is afraid that there will come a time that city residents could not anymore be accommodated.
The records show that in 2006, the CCMC College of Nursing had 434 students with P7.9 million income. The amount was higher compared to its expenses which was only P5.8 million.
However, the problem started in 2011 when the nursing school only had 243 enrollees causing its income to drop to only P9,391,583. The amount was not enough to cover its expenses which was more than P9.5 million.
The problem got worst last year when the number of students reduced further to 191. It only posted P7.2 million income while the expenses was at P9.7 million.
The City Council passed a resolution in 2005 that limits the enrollees from within Cebu City. The city government also subsidized half of the expenses of the college.
Vicenta Jaluague, dean of the CCMC College of Nursing, has proposed to accept non-city residents if the enrollees is below 100 two months before the start of the class. The proposal is also subject of the evaluation of the council.
The college received a commendation from the council in 2008 for having almost 100-percent passing rate in the Nursing Licensure Examination. The record shows that of the 117 graduates 114 passed the board in that year. — (FREEMAN)
