CEBU, Philippines - With the goal of achieving an enlightened, empowered civil society, a group of college students has initiated an interactive activity on Saturday, March 16.
Students carried sheets of paper with demands for a better society written on it, which when flipped to the other side contains pledges, willingness and contributions towards achieving it.
“Haruhay Fest†is an event of Psychology majors from the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu and fully supported by the Movement for a Livable Cebu (MLC) and its youth arm Youth for a Livable Cebu (YLC).
The Cebuano word “haruhay†is the closest equivalent of “livable,†which is the thrust of the MLC and YLC, groups of active Cebuano citizens guarding and preserving the beauty of Cebu’s heritage, culture and environment.
Two Psychology classes joined together to create the activity that will include biking and skating along the streets of Lahug and Kamputhaw, presentations, and interactive discussions.
Adapting the famous physical exercise that includes world music, a “Zumba sa Sugbo†will also take place.
During the press briefing, MLC convenor Joel Lee and founding member musician Budoy gave a sample impromptu performance of the unrecorded song based on the Zumba activity.
Dubbed “Haruhay Fun,†physical activities like biking and skating tutorials, ultimate Frisbee, traditional Filipino games and an “open mic†portion where everyone is allowed to perform on stage.
The activity starts at six in the morning and ends at noon.-— /FPL (FREEMAN)
