One of Toledo City escapees recaptured

CEBU, Philippines - One of the three escapees from the Toledo City police detention cell was arrested at his residence in Barangay Biga yesterday morning.

Apolinario Canumay who is charged with frustrated murder was arrested by SPO1 Ahmed Barquin at 4:30 a.m.

He was one of the three detainees who bolted out from the detention cell last Saturday.

Canumay’s mother informed the police of her son’s presence after learning his escape.

“Gisabot na nako daan ang inahan gahapon nga pa-surrenderon iyang anak kay kahibalo man gyud ko nga mo-uli to. (I made arrangement with his mother yesterday to ask her son to surrender because I knew he will go home,” Barquin said.

Barquin said Canumay did not resist when arrested.

“Wala na siya musukol…nangayo pa gani siya og pasaylo nga niikyas siya. (He did not resist, he even apologized for escaping),” Barquin said.

The two other escapees, Joselito Rabaya and Nilo Lombreno, remained at large.

Rabaya is charged with illegal possession of firearm while Lombreno is facing rape.

PO1 Jerson Lebumfacil, desk officer and jailer, said the detainees escaped on Saturday evening amid the heavy downpour.

The escapees cut the iron bars at the back window of the detention cell using a hacksaw.

Lombreno’s wife, Angelina, was arrested by the police after she was found to be responsible for smuggling a hacksaw inside the detention cell. She will be charged for obstruction of justice.

Cebu Provincial Police Office director Patrocinio Comendador has also directed the Provincial Investigation and Detective Management Branch (PIDMB) to conduct an investigation against the members of the Toledo City police.

“Despite the arrest of Canumay, we will still conduct an investigation to determine the liability on the part of the police,” Comendador said.—/FPL (FREEMAN)
