CEBU, Philippines - In a span of two hours, two persons died and three others were injured in separate vehicular accidents in the towns of Sibonga and San Fernando Saturday morning.

A man who was believed to be suffering from mental problems died after he was hit by a motorcycle on the national road of Sitio Taloot, Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga 10:30 in the morning.

Police failed to identify the man who was hit by a Suzuki Raider motorcycle bearing plate number 8346 GD driven by Gino Gonesto, 17, of Barangay Bae.

The man was rushed to the Deiparine Medical Clinic for first aid but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician, Dr. James Deiparine.

Aside from Gonesto, also injured were his two back riders, Lea Albiso and Hazel Laroa, both of legal age and of Barangay Bae.

The three were taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for further medical attention due to their injuries.

SPO1 Jaime Mendoza, team leader, said Gonesto was travelling home from Barangay Poblacion when the man suddenly crossed the road and accidentally got hit by motorcycle, causing Gonesto and his back riders to slump on the road.

The man was also thrown a few meters away due to the strong impact causing severe head injury.

Police are preparing charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple physical injuries against Gonesto.

They are also coordinating with nearby police stations for possible identification of the victim.

Meanwhile, a 62-year-old man died after he was hit by a speeding minibus shortly before midday on the national highway of Barangay Sangat, San Fernando.

Remeticado Perfecto Sasuman, a resident of the place, suffered injuries in different parts of his body and was taken to the Carcar Provincial Hospital but was declared dead a few minutes later.

Jodito Mahinay, 38, of Barangay Bagakay, Barili and driver of the Chan Transit minibus (GXT-109) voluntarily surrendered to the Carcar City police. He was then turned over to the San Fernando police.

PO3 Julius Cesar Parages, traffic investigator, said Mahinay was travelling to the south from Cebu City when Sasuman reportedly failed to notice the bus and crossed the road.

“Nikalit ra kuno ug labang unya kusog ang dagan wala dayon ka-brake, (He suddenly crossed the road and the driver of the speeding vehicle wasn’t able to step on the brakes.)” Parages said in a phone interview.

Parages added that both parties are planning to amicably settle the matter.  (FREEMAN)
