CEBU, Philippines - Starting yesterday, the Coast Guard Station-Cebu has a new commander.

Former Coast Guard Command Center director, Commander Weniel Azcuna, assumed the Cebu office after an order for Cebu Commander Rolando Punzalan to move to the Coast Guard Station-Manila.

The turnover of command at the Mariner’s Court in Pier 1, Cebu City yesterday morning was presided over by the Central Visayas district commander, Commodore William Melad.

Punzalan was lauded for his accomplishments and leadership during his two-year stint as CGS-Cebu commander. He was given a medal and ribbon for his outstanding achievements.

Punzalan was recognized as key planner, organizer, and coordinator during the Sinulog fluvial procession wherein hundreds of sea vessels participated, as well as during the canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod.

The CGS-Cebu was also awarded the best coast guard station last year under Punzalan’s watch.

“His dedication to work was very fulfilling to the Province of Cebu and its people,” Melad said.

A teary-eyed Punzalan also thanked all his men for the noble undertakings they shared together.

For his part, Azcuna will be continuing Punzalan’s programs to focus on maritime safety and security in order to give quality service to the community.

Azcuna considers his new post as a challenging one, being one of the major stations in the country.

“It will be my pleasure to work on matters with our counterparts, as we are inspired by the knowledge that everyday is a challenge for us. The PCG is here to serve 24 hours a day and seven days a week,” Azcuna said.

Azcuna recently completed his Master of Science in Maritime Affairs in Malmo, Sweden and being the commander of the CGS-Cebu is his first assignment.  (FREEMAN)
