CEBU, Philippines - A British national died and an 11-year-old boy was injured after they were hit by a vehicle driven by a Korean national around midnight yesterday on the National Highway of Barangay Talamban, Cebu City.
David Jowett, 55, of Borbajo St., Barangay Talamban, was killed on the spot while Jeff Fuentes, also of the same place, suffered injuries to different parts of his body and was rushed to the North General Hospital.
The suspect, Jeong Soyoung, 47, of Barangay Tawason, Mandaue City, tried to elude arrest but was apprehended by Talamban policemen in a hot pursuit operation.
PO2 Adrian Cagalita, of the Traffic Patrol Group of the Cebu City Police Office, said Soyoung was driving his Honda CRV Wagon (YAU-282) when Jowett suddenly crossed the street.
Soyoung failed to apply brakes and hit Fuentes.
Due to the strong impact, Jowett was thrown off and his head hit the pavement.
Soyoung sped off but was arrested a few minutes later.
He is now detained at the Tourist Police stockade in Barangay Sto. Niño pending the filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and physical injuries against him.
Meanwhile, four people sustained severe injuries after a government multicab they were riding rammed a tree in barangay Calangcan, Badian last Friday.
Raul Lyndon Catigbe and his wife Gemma and their two relatives - Necitas Repana and Zenaida Cabasag - were heading towards barangay Poblacion to pick up Raul’s father who was confined at the Badian District Hospital.
While travelling, Raul reportedly attempted to maneuver the steering wheel to avoid a huge rock in middle of the road but lost control and rammed the tree.
Marciano Celino, barangay captain of Solsugan, reported the accident to Badian Police Station.
PNP personnel led by SPO2 Ronald Elcana immediately responded to the area.
