CEBU, Philippines —Last September 28th, lovers of Filipino food gathered at Café Laguna’s outlets across the city in celebration of the restaurant’s 28th Anniversary. In keeping with tradition, a grand buffet was served for both lunch and dinner, filling every branch to the brim with eager diners.
This year’s buffet was centered on heritage, commemorating loved dishes in different regions. Among the lineup was “Kansi,” a Negrense soup of beef shanks and nangka. The meat was tender and the soup held the perfect sourness (a la Sinigang) and savory taste (a la Pochero). Another favorite among the buffet guests was the Seafood Platter of perfectly cooked crabs, shrimp, squid, and tahong.
Dessert was a festive affair with a spread of kakanin like Maja Mais (a Café Laguna classic), Biko, and Palitaw. The restaurant’s signature Buko Pandan, Turon, and fresh fruits capped the sumptuous buffet, a sweet ending to a hearty meal.
The family members behind Café Laguna, the Urbinas, were at the branches entertaining guests. Matriarch Julita Urbina was all smiles and warm hugs as she welcomed old friends and beloved repeat customers. With her were her children, Jill, Jet, Grace, Raki, Jan, and son-in-law Kelly, making sure everyone had an enjoyable time at the anniversary buffet.
Years have passed since a mother of five decided to open a carenderia to ensure her family did not worry about food to eat. On Café Laguna’s 28th year, what was once a humble eatery has turned into a Cebuano staple for authentic Filipino Cuisine.
