CEBU, Philippines — Shortly after she was declared the first “The Clash” grand winner, Golden Cañedo was seen in GMA-7’s weekly drama “Magpakailanman,” playing herself as she showed her journey from a young dreamer to a nationwide singing champion whose prizes included P1 million, a house and lot and a brand new car.
Now, the Cebuana singer has been tapped to be the voice behind the anthology show’s theme song, also titled “Magpakailanman and previously sung by former Kapuso talent Kyla.
Kyla transferred to ABS-CBN six years ago, but her rendition of “Magpakailanman” was still heard every week since the show returned on air in 2013.
On March 12, GMA-7’s YouTube account featured a new music video of “Magpakailanman” with Golden’s heartfelt rendition providing the backdrop to a montage of scenes culled from previous “Magpakailanman” episodes.
Wency Cornejo, vocalist of the former After Image band, is seen in the music video supervising Golden’s recording of the song which he composed. Cornejo, the son of “Magpakailanman” host Mel Tiangco, originally performed the song during the show’s 2002-2007 run.
Golden, a native of Minglanilla, bested 61 other far more experienced contestants to be declared “The Clash” champion last year. The Grade 10 student, who used to study at the University of the Visayas Minglanilla Campus, has since moved to Cavite with her mom and younger sibling to pursue her showbiz career.
Last month, the Sarah Geronimo look-alike received the Most Promising Female Singing Performer award at the National Customer’s Choice Annual Awards 2019.
Just this Saturday, she also released her debut single, “Tayo Pa Rin, exclusively on Barangay LS FM.
Golden, seen weekly on the musical variety show “Studio 7,” is expected to release a complete album this year.
