The Versatile umbrella

Archie Modequillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — There’s no argument whatsoever about the versatility – and indispensability – of the umbrella as a personal tool, especially in regions where the weather is often unpredictable. It’s a dependable protection from both rain and sun. And it does for both women and men.

This personal tool was used for thousands of years, with its origins said to date back to Egypt around 1000 B.C. In the past, the umbrella was a much nobler object than it is now. In Persia, it was often used to shade the emperor. It was probably from Greece that it arrived in Ancient Rome. It took the form that is known of it today in China.

It started as a shelter from the sun, not the rain. Hence, its very name contains “umbra,” the Latin for “shadow.”

The umbrella has since become a good fashion accessory. The thing can add a sense of femininity to women and masculinity to men. It is quite trendy, especially when used in conjunction with other items like a handbag, scarf, and head gear.

Fashion umbrellas can be carried under various weather conditions or seasons. An umbrella can be an extension of one’s image and shall have a place in any man’s or woman’s wardrobe. When paired with the right outfit, the total look is almost always impressive.

When choosing an umbrella, one shall consider the color and shape, as well as the durability and overall quality. The handle also matters; an umbrella with a wooden, semi-circular handle is quite aesthetically appealing. For an added appeal, one where the tip of the handle comes in the shape of an animal’s head – like that of a duck, dog, or even a mythical creature like a dragon – is fashionable.

When it comes to color and design, not all fashion umbrellas need to be in bright colors with multiple pattern designs. A complete black umbrella with a lace trim at the edges, for example, can complement perfectly with a gothic or grunge appearance. If a more colorful one is preferred, a striped appearance or those with a floral design may be considered.

The young ones may also consider umbrellas printed with cartoon characters. While usually more fit for children, such pieces can also work for adults as it makes for a Japanese-inspired Lolita or kawaii look.

Not all umbrellas may come in an octagonal form, and so the shape can be a matter of personal choice or ‘statement’. Some of the more trendy models come in the shape of a square, triangle, or even in the shape of a heart. The more unique the shape, the better.

It is also wise to consider the look of the umbrella when it’s folded. Toting around a folded umbrella is just as trendy as carrying one that’s in the open position. It is an interesting accessory when open as it is when folded.

When picking out an umbrella, it shall be carried around in different positions. And then one may ask oneself whether it adds to the look he or she is hoping to achieve. Just like a purse, an umbrella has a certain feel to it, and one will know by toting it around whether it’s right for him or her.

Some people today find it a pain to carry an umbrella around. They are only forced to carry it when it’s about to rain or when the sun is smoldering hot. Perhaps they don’t realize how relevant and necessary the umbrella is, then and now.

Through time, the umbrella has not lost a bit of its functionality – as a practical essential and fashion accessory.
