A Good Book on a Sunday

Alexa Montecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Many people reserve their Sundays for certain chores that they do not have time for on other days. Sunday is generally the “off” day, meant for rest and relaxation, but it usually turns out to be a busier day instead. This is especially true among working people.

But, okay, one will probably not be washing clothes or fixing the house fence all day long on a Sunday. Even if he or she wakes up late from the previous night out, going about the usual Sunday chores won’t probably eat up the whole day. For sure, there is still some time to spend in the ideal Sunday way – rested and relaxed.

No, it would be a real shame to spend the rest of the day in front of the TV. Reading a good book would be the better – if not best – thing to do. Better still, if one could take a walk to nearby park when the sunlight has softened, with a book in hand. A bench under a tree is a perfect place where to read.

In the city’s uptown area, along Maxilom Avenue towards Fuente Osmena, there’s a new place that opens. It’s a coffee shop and ‘library’, so supposedly local booklovers can head over there and enjoy reading a good book over a mug of good coffee. What a treat it would be!

But wherever the Sunday book-reading may take place, it’s a nice thing to do for a good chunk of a Sunday. Even in this age of advanced visual and sound technologies, there’s still no experience quite like on would have in reading a book. Reading a book is not entertainment – it’s a pleasure.
