The love that created the stars

KIDSTUFF - The Freeman

Have you ever heard about

the Bagobo men? An ancient tribe, the Bagobos are the inhabitants of the west coast of Davao Gulf towards the mountain ranges of Mt. Apo. They are famous for their ornate traditions in weaponry and other metal arts.

The old Bagobo men have many stories to tell about the early days of the world. One of their tales tells something interesting about the Sun and the Moon.

The Bagobos believe that the Sun is the husband of the Moon. Long, long ago, the two travelled together through the sky and it was a beautiful sight they created.

Until one day, the Moon got pregnant. She was overjoyed and told the Sun about it. However, the sun was not too happy. When the Moon asked for the reason, he answered, "What if it is a girl?"

The Moon said, "So what if we have a girl?"

The Sun replied, "A girl cannot be like me. I don't want a girl. I need a boy who will be as strong as me and who can keep my name intact."

The Moon was bothered to hear it. She started thinking of a way to keep the baby safe.

One day, the Sun went on a journey to another part of the sky. In a short while, the Moon gave birth to a baby - a baby girl. The Moon was sad and scared of what her husband would do to her little child. To keep her child safe from the Sun, she hid it in the clouds.

When the Sun came back home after a few days, he saw that the Moon's tummy was no longer as before. He asked her for the baby.

"It was a girl," the Moon answered. "So I threw it away."

The Sun knew that the Moon was not strong of mind enough to let go of her baby. He searched all over and at last found the baby hidden in the clouds. He got very angry and wanted to seize the baby.

The Moon tried to stop the Sun from harming their baby. She cried so hard that, as they squabble, droplets of her tears sprayed all over the sky. The droplets of tears that symbolized a mother's great love for her child began to shine and became the stars.

As the quarrel continued, the Moon sent the baby far away into one corner of the sky, away from the Sun's rage. Realizing how much the Moon loved her baby, the Sun decided to stay away, and they have since gone in separate ways.

So while the Sun shines during the day, the Moon appears at night. And the baby has become what is now known as the Morning Star. Reference: kidsgen.com
