Ikebana International Cebu Chapter 145: Simplicity for the Sapphire Anniversary
CEBU, Philippines - Ikebana International Cebu Chapter 145 celebrates its 45th year - or Sapphire anniversary - by way of a three-day exhibit at The Northwing Atrium, SM City Cebu from March 20 to 22.
The anniversary exhibit features Freestyle Ikebana, the contemporary style of flower arrangement, which does away with traditional forms and rules and gives emphasis instead to modern aesthetics, spaces, techniques and technology.
Ikebana Cebu Chapter president Marilou Hyden explains, "Freestyle Ikebana seeks creative beauty either through Naturalistic or Abstract expression. Unlike the classical styles where rules are strictly followed, the materials, forms and compositions are unrestricted in Freestyle. In addition to floral or plant materials, the Ikebana artist can use anything she prefers such as paper, fabric, resin, plastic, metal, and dried materials for her composition. She has complete freedom to convey what she wants to express in the manner that she wants to express it."
A lecture on both Classical and Freestyle Ikebana, has been scheduled for Saturday, March 21, still at the Northwing Atrium. It is to be followed by a hands-on demonstration of three Classical Styles (Moribana, Nageire, and Morimono) and two Freestyle Ikebana arrangements, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
A lecture and floral arrangement demonstration on both Classical and Freestyle Ikebana takes place on March 21. The lecture is at 2 p.m. and the demonstration on three classical style and two freestyle arrangements follows at 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The public is invited to delight in the beauty of the 34 floral designs by The Cebu Chapter 145 officers and members comprising the exhibit. Also contributing special Ikebana creations are The Consular Office of Japan in Cebu, the Manila Chapter 108 and Davao Chapter 133 of Ikebana International. (FREEMAN)
