CEBU, Philippines – For many individuals, the mere mention of Godfather brings back images of the blockbuster movie of the same title. But there is actually more to being “el padrino” than granting favors and running a mafia organization.
One such person who epitomizes the role of a model godfather to everyone is Don Luis Rosas Alvarez. He is everybody’s caring “Tito,” a loyal husband to Merceditas Borromeo Alvarez and a dedicated father to his children Louie, Merche Castro, Marita Arambulo, Mariles Nable, Marisse Sy and their spouses.
It was no wonder that for his 90th birthday, family, relatives and dear friends joined in the celebration to wish him the very best life has to offer. The birthday was actually on October 30, but the celebration was moved a few days later – to veer away from Halloween.
Sitting comfortably in his customized mobile chair, Sitoy, as he is fondly called, blew out his birthday candles while being surrounded by family, several grandchildren of different ages and even down to the sole great grandchild.
The Luis Alfonso Hall of the family-owned Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel, a sterling resort of choice of many discerning travellers, was fabulously transformed into an elegant grand ballroom of a bygone era that many still long for.
Color and life radiated throughout the ballroom as guests converged under a white, red and black canopy. The tables were elegantly set in black tablecloths and black seat covers to match. The centerpiece had a long stemmed crystal vase decorated with red roses and plumes.
As expected, and as what the resort is known for, service was impeccable. From parking attendants to the welcome committee, everything was orchestrated to perfection.
The lively entertainment was provided by individuals close to the celebrant’s heart. His four daughters Merche, Mariles, Marisse and Marita and only son Louie joined by their spouses and children readily performed a dance number. Loyal and dedicated officers and staff of the resort likewise did a dance number to the tune of the past era.
Guests feasted on Costabella’s culinary offerings, with various food stations of Asian and European cuisine. Red and white wine were also generously served throughout the night. Master baker Maris Sy lovingly prepared delightful desserts that had everyone going back for more.
Brief after-dinner remarks were said to thank everyone who came and gave their time to a man genuinely admired for his work ethics and unconditional dedication to his family. There was genuine love all around for Don Luis Rosas Alvarez, a gentleman who lives according to the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship.
