8th Annual Pintal Art Exhibit 4th Cristobal B.C. Espina Art Awards

Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - While the showcased art pieces of the 8th Annual Pintal Art Exhibit are founded on the traditional quirks and stylistic concerns of the classical painting form, their overall execution goes beyond satisfying the ideals of compositional balance and representational approximations.

The exhibit’s opening on March 14 at the CAP Art Center along Osmeña Blvd. also served as the awarding ceremonies of the 4th Cristobal B. C. Espina Art Awards, where the students of the University of San Carlos’ fine arts program were recognized for their creative submissions this year.

It was more than your average student art exhibit. The show proudly stands as a platform where the exhibiting artists mirror the lessons they had learned from their professors, along with defining what their individual artistic strengths and creative points of interests are.

Taking their respective inspirations from different design disciplines and creative movements, the works presented in this year’s Annual Pintal Art Exhibit basically combine the aesthetic dynamics of traditional painting with surrealism, art deco, neo-expressionism, pop-art and graffiti design.

Aiza Karessa Ramirez’s “Life is Priceless” – one of the show’s worthy-of-mention pieces – exemplifies this aspect of the show by taking a playful and profound approach in saying something by combining art deco-inspired embellishments with the thought-provoking elements of thematic contrast.

The same could be said about Crezzo John Vianney Paz’s “Sa Pagtiklop sa Akong mga Mata,” where the artist manages to reveal how pigments can simultaneously clear and define the underling layers of thought in paintings.

“Pagbabalik-Tanaw” by Marvin Madalogdog – another interesting piece – gives an interactive twist in the execution of his work by actually embedding a real clock in the middle of the composition – with the painting essentially touching up on the cycle of life’s routines and the ruinous implications of caprice and habit.

“Sardinas” by Kim Napha Barbara Aurelia Bartz – this year’s Pintal Art Awards 1st Place winner – combines traditional compositions with a true-to-life installation as its frame, giving its title a metaphorical anchor that is impossible to miss.

The 8th Annual Pintal Art Exhibit proudly marked how raw and unhindered the aesthetic views of today’s generation of artists are growing to be. The exhibit ran until March 22.
