Sanso Rare and Essential

Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

Forty works crafted by master painter Juvenal Sanso are currently on exhibit in Qube Gallery at the Henry Hotel, presented in celebration of the painter's 65th year in art.

Entitled Sanso: Rare and Essential, the exhibit collects original pieces that date from the 1960s to 2011, illustrating the internationally acclaimed painter's unwavering passion to create, apart from congruently proffering his unique and distinct diction as a creative visionary.

Highlighting the different themes and subjects that have captivated his discerning eye over the years, Rare and Essential affords viewers with a valid sampling of Sanso's aesthetic philosophies and sensibilities, with his expressionist inclinations taking center stage.

Featuring a range of works taken from the different series and themes explored by the painter throughout his stellar career—from his golden dawn and seascapes, flowers in a vase, and summer and water landscape series—the show takes the time in leading its viewers to the different qualifiers that have come to define Sanso as one of the world's most celebrated talents.

Born in Reus, Spain in 1928, Sanso migrated to the Philippines with his parents and older sister when he was four years old. Studying fine arts in the University of the Philippines as well as the University of Santo Tomas, he learned to hone his craft from different mentors, who included National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, Dominador Castañeda and Ireno Miranda.

In 1950, he won the Grand Prize award in the Art Association of the Philippines watercolor competition. In 1952, he won another award, this time, working with oil.  Following his two years of winning, he pursued further studies in the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome and at the L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts.

As a painter, Sanso has built a reputation in seamlessly combining method and message in his work, complemented by a personable character that is distinctly just him.

Sanso: Rare and Essential  will be on exhibit until February 8, 2014, in Qube Gallery at The Henry Hotel, No 1 Paseo Saturina, Maria Luisa Road, Banilad. For more information, visit www.qubegallery.com or like Qube @ www.facebook.com/qubegallery
