Celebration of art, creativity

CEBU, Philippines - Artastic marked its first year with a display of the artwork of its students, of the students of University of the Visayas New School of Art and Design, a printmaking contest, a mixed media contest, a speaker design contest, and interactive activities by sponsors and participants at the Ayala Center Cebu Activity Area last July 6.

Children, as young as nine years old, presented their artworks taking on inspiration from art movements such as Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art, to name a few.

Cubism which started in Paris between 1907 to 1914 rejected the inherited concept that art should copy nature or the traditional techniques of art at the time. Cubists reduce a subject into geometric forms and reassemble them while still keeping the subject’s essence. Expressionism that began in Germany in the beginning of the 20th century presents the world solely through the artist’s perspective and distorts it radically to communicate intense moods and emotions.

Surrealism believed that our unconscious minds and dreams are very important in revealing who we are as human beings. Surrealist art often puts images together to create unexpected reactions from the viewers, while Pop Art emerged in Britain and the US during the 1950s. It challenged the fine art traditions at the time by using images of popular culture such as brands, advertising, news, comic book and mundane everyday objects.

Artastic which started out in the summer of May 2012 was created to introduce art to children, to encourage the use of their creativity and rich imaginations and develop not only their skills but also nurture their love of art.

The children are exposed to different types of mediums in their class, such as watercolor and acrylic painting, sketching, oil pastel compositions, mixed media art and different types of crafts.

Artastic is also designed not just for the artistically inclined but is great for children who love to create, learn something new and have fun.
