Turn it on

CEBU, Philippines - “Can I fit in this?” Jay Failanga doubts about slipping into a tiny bejeweled swimwear on a hanger.

Sure, he can. No dinner the previous day, no breakfast, no lunch before the pictorial, say his friends.

Nothing has changed since his first appearance on national television as Vice Ganda’s—the controversial, acid-tongued comedian on ABS-CBN’s Showtime—alter ego. Even before it, the full-time make-up artist has already set his love and devotion to the performer, who appeared on a cover of a global magazine.

“Vice Ganda is all about extreme shades. If he’s using darker shades on the lips, it’s really dark. If it’s light, it’s going to be too pale,” he describes. “And Vice is about the hips. Those are his trademarks.”

The rise of the Vice Ganda legion has opened the gates for newer combinations. See how the female pop culture embraces men’s Mohawk hair (shaven both sides, leaving a thick strip in the center) with glittering eye miracles. They’ve rocked the scene with colored hair—blonde, green, pink, blue.

It has also given birth to the revival of androgyny, something that both sexes can wear (if you dare).

Let the change begin. A swipe of bright, colorful eyeliner feels right in our unpredictable sunshine—but finding a formula that can stand up to a day at the beach, park, or pool is another story altogether. This season as well, the beauty inspirations are coming to the rescue with melt-proof formulas that promise to withstand colder days, humid nights, and even the occasional dip in the cerulean sea.

And here’s how Jay lives up to the hype.
