Beehive properly

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Amy Winehouse’s is still the highest.

Long before she took it as a signature look during her Hollywood peak, Cebuano make-up artist and hairstylist Martha Opolentesima has already mastered the art of pulling it up. To begin with, he’s famous for his handwork: He could either make use of your natural hair or maneuver it with faux strands.

“Women like it because it gives them instant glamour,” he says. “If your dress is simple, go for beehive.”

Many of today’s fashionistas would argue that its impact has lasted longer than 50 years—indeed it’s a look that is as relevant today as it was in the Sixties.

The beehive is a red carpet super star as seen on Angelina Jolie, Amanda Holden and Naomi Campbell, and we can’t imagine Amy Winehouse or Marge Simpson without it.

Of course, the look has taken a recent surge of fame courtesy of Mad Men, the U.S. television drama set in a Sixties advertising agency. Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan Holloway, favors a beehive, and it has made the hairdo as cool as her voluptuous figure.

“The beehive is a classic look that is ever-popular. Think Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot with an updated lived-in texture,” he goes on.

“It is all about manipulating the shape and volume of your hair to suit your features—perfect for effortlessly chic appeal.” (FREEMAN)
